July's Poem (Indian attribution)

I give you this one thought to keep

- I am with you still -

I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone

- I am with you still -

in each new dawn.

-Told by the elders, in Blackfoot Indian tribes.

Reflection: This poem is a way of showing how the Blackfoot Indians did not morn over deaths but rejoice for their loved ones now could be with other spirits. They also believe that people did not literally "die" for they could be found in anything around them; such as, if you loved working in the garden during your physical years, in your spiritual years you could be found their in the plants of the garden and etc. In this poem the author uses a lot of metaphor in order to connect the person to nature, such as ' I am the autumn rain", and in this way it allows the 'human' life to become one with nature, so one's spirit surrounds the people. The author also speaks to the reader and directs him to remember one thing as he writes, "I give you this t to keep", thereby emphasizing the importance of the message. As well the poet uses repetition of "I am" to almost create the deceased as alive and still in being with the living - makes the deceased still an active participant in the world. This is kind of nice because when a person loses a loved one, he or she can still share thoughts and feelings with the loved one in another way - through nature. .

Dear Diary,
The white man has come onto our homeland, and I observe how hostile the white man is - he is rough and takes the land and the beasts as his own - he does not share those things which he has been given by the great one in the sky - In turn he takes our men - his language is different and he is not at peace with himself. I watch him from the trees and I know he his not safe. I do not trust him as I have seen my people die at his hand. My only consolation is from the Great Spirit. I myself have lost a loved one. Oh the sorrow I have felt. This poem written by one with wisdom helps heal my soul, my broken heart. It tells me to not morn but to look to everything as a symbol of my lost one. Don't cry for they are gone, laugh for the fun times which were shared. My loved one may be dead, their heart may have stopped but their soul will forever live on.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: So what happens when one does not receive similar opportunities? What is the effect on individuals and on community when all are not able to realize their dream?
The Native America Indian was not given the opportunity to chose the destiny of his people- the white man was. He was moved to a reservation and oppressed as a people. This is embarrassing as a white person to realize how our ancestors so discriminated others in light of pursuing their "dream". What are the opportunities available to the Native American? I do not have a chance to create my land, to further refurbish it with vegetables- it is now the white mans. My opportunity is now in the hands of someone else, it is no longer an opportunity, and it is a manifest destiny. Our community has now fallen apart, and we no longer sing and dance around the fire. Our crops have died for no one is able to care for them- we are not Indian anymore, we are just people, helping to make a population. Oh great father in the sky, show me the way.

Political cartoon:

(cartoon says; the reason for the indian outbreak)

In this cartoon the artist is trying to portray that the Indian outbreak was soley because of White men introducing money to the American Indians thus embedding greed and want into the Indians for money.

Political Cartoon:

In this cartoon the artist has placed lady liberty in the middle of a white women and black women over the white women there is a sign that says "To Freedom" over the black women there is a sign that says "To Jail". This cartoon is trying to potray the issue on rascism in America and stereotypes .

"In sundry of these storms the winds were so fierce and the seas so high, as they could not bear a knot of sail, but were forced to hull for divers days together. And in one of them, as they thus lay at hull in a mighty storm, a lusty young man called John Howland, coming upon some occasion above the gratings, was, with a roll of the ship, thrown into sea; but it pleased God that he caught hold of the topsail halyards, which hung overboard and ran out at length. Yet he held his hold (though he was sundry fathoms under water) till he was hauled up by the same rope to the brim of the water, and then with a boat hook and other means got into the ship again and his life saved. And though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after and became a profitable member both in church and commonwealth. In all this voyage there died but one of the passengers, which was William But ten, a youth, servant to Samuel Fuller, when they drew near the coast."

Bradford William "Of Plymouth Plantation <http://spider.georgetowncollege.edu/english/coke/bradford.htm >

Reflection: In this passage the author makes an appoint to state God as a reasoning for all things- " but it pleased God that he caught hold of the topsail halyards, which hung overboard and ran out at length. " Just like the puritians thought, God was credited for all things good and bad, if you were a good person good things would be placed upon you by God and if you were not a good person bad things would be placed upon you by God. The author also uses very descriptive language to make the reader feel as if they are a member upon the ship themselves-"In sundry of these storms the winds were so fierce and the seas so high, as they could not bear a knot of sail, but were forced to hull for divers days together".

Dear Diary,
Today was one in which I will never forget. The man in whom I love almost was lost, of course he
doesn't know I love him. Near death he survived, it is God's will for us to be together I just know
it. John Howland was knocked over boards because of thee harsh winds and storms brought our
way. He found hold of a ore in which was just enough link for him to hold onto with all his might. I
thank God over and over again, not only did he save a man, he saved my future husband.

Essential Question: So what happens when one does not receive similar opportunities? What is
the effect on individuals and on community when all are not able to realize their dream? In this
passage each individual were given an opportunity to come to America (which is what they are in
the process of doing), they have yet to experiance- not experiance the American Dream.

Anne Bradstreet

We May Live Together

"If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were lov'd by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole Mines of gold
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that Rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee give recompetence.
Thy love is such I can no way repay.
The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.
Then while we live, in love let's so persever
That when we live no more, we may live ever. "

Upon Some Distemper of Body

"In anguish of my heart replete with woes, And wasting pains, which best my body knows, In tossing slumbers on my wakeful bed, Bedrenched with tears that flowed from mournful head, Till nature had exhausted all her store, Then eyes lay dry, disabled to weep more; And looking up unto his throne on high, Who sendeth help to those in misery; He chased away those clouds and let me see My anchor cast i' th' vale with safety. He eased my soul of woe, my flesh of pain, and brought me to the shore from troubled main. "

In Thankful Remembrance for My Dear Husband's Safe Arrival Sept 3, 1662

" What shall I render to Thy name Or how Thy praises speak? My thanks how shall I testify? O Lord, Thou know'st I'm weak. I owe so much, so little can Return unto Thy name, Confusion seizes on my soul, And I am filled with shame. O Thou that hearest prayers, Lord, To Thee shall come all flesh Thou hast me heard and answered, My plaints have had access. What did I ask for but Thou gav'st? What could I more desire? But thankfulness even all my days I humbly this require. Thy mercies, Lord, have been so great In number numberless, Impossible for to recount Or any way express. O help Thy saints that sought Thy face T' return unto Thee praise And walk before Thee as they ought, In strict and upright ways. "

Dear Diary,
I look to poetry of love for the hope of John and I. One day we will be. We will have a relationship like Anne Bradstreet and her husband. I will love my man as she loves her's. They are the epitomy of what love truly is. Eternity, forever, after life, always. Of course my first husband; my Lord my Savior will always come first but closly after there John will have a embedded into my heart. I was sick a few weeks ago, there has been a cough going around on the ships. No one is quiet sure what exactly it is, but people are slowly leaving us one by one from this awful thing. There is a demon on this ship somewhere, we will soon find where. Mrs.Bradstreet described perfectly what is going on in our barracks.

Essential Question: So what happens when one does not receive similar opportunities? What is the effect on individuals and on community when all are not able to realize their dream? Anne does not know she doesn't have to love her husband, she feels as if it is a duty of a women to love a man. She feels it is the "American" way to provide and care for her husband. She was not given the oppotunities along with many other women to get a full education, to be independent, and in some cases even choose who they are to spend the rest of their life with. Community was stable at time periods of such, but what if one single women would have branched out and decided to not be a house wife. What are the possibilities, imagine all the things that could have been different in our history to now.

Huswifery

"Make me, O Lord, thy Spinning Wheele compleat;

Thy Holy Worde my Distaff make for mee.

Make mine Affections thy Swift Flyers neate,

And make my Soule thy holy Spoole to bee.

My Conversation make to be thy Reele,

And reele the yarn thereon spun of thy Wheele.

Make me thy Loome then, knit therein this Twine:

And make thy Holy Spirit, Lord, winde quills:

Then weave the Web thyselfe. The yarn is fine.

Thine Ordinances make my Fulling Mills.

Then dy the same in Heavenly Colours Choice,

All pinkt with Varnish't Flowers of Paradise.

Then cloath therewith mine Understanding, Will,

Affections, Judgment, Conscience, Memory;

My Words and Actions, that their shine may fill

My wayes with glory and thee glorify.

Then mine apparell shall display before yee

That I am Cloathd in Holy robes for glory."

^ POETRY CHART!!

Dear Diary,
Dear God Almighty, maker of heavan and earth, allow me to be the best I can be- Use me as your will desires. Feel my heart with love for you first Lord, and John second. Cleanse my heart body and soul, I am your clay Lord, mold me. I am a beding branch beneath your will. Edward Taylor, speaks of a relationship I desire with you Lord. Use his metaphoric poetry and cast those relationships upon us all. Allow John to love you first Lord, and if your desire me second. Use my hands to mend bread for my future husband, my back to hold me up when bearing a child, and my feet to walk through what struggles that may come forth.

Essential Question: So what happens when one does not receive similar opportunities? What is the effect on individuals and on community when all are not able to realize their dream? When God is in charge of all good and bad things, when does it become the problems/excitings of the people. The Puritans were not given the opportunity to have the chance to create their own destiny, they believed "what comes, comes". Thus, no one was able to reach for goals, mourn for lost ones, or rejoice on holidays; they didn't get to truly experiance what we would call "life". When a single individual isn't in recieving of similar opportunities people around them tend to help one acheive such, but when the community as a whole does not recieve opportunities no one knows any difference therefore they continue to live life without opportunities like the rest.

Jonathan Edwards

Sinners in the hands of an Angry God!

"There is no want of power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment. Men's hands cannot be strong when God rises up. The strongest have no power to resist him, nor can any deliver out of his hands. -- He is not only able to cast wicked men into hell, but he can most easily do it. Sometimes an earthly prince meets with a great deal of difficulty to subdue a rebel, who has found means to fortify himself, and has made himself strong by the numbers of his followers. But it is not so with God. There is no fortress that is any defence from the power of God. Though hand join in hand, and vast multitudes of God's enemies combine and associate themselves, they are easily broken in pieces. They are as great heaps of light chaff before the whirlwind; or large quantities of dry stubble before devouring flames. We find it easy to tread on and crush a worm that we see crawling on the earth; so it is easy for us to cut or singe a slender thread that any thing hangs by: thus easy is it for God, when he pleases, to cast his enemies down to hell. What are we, that we should think to stand before him, at whose rebuke the earth trembles, and before whom the rocks are thrown down? "

Reflection: As a Christian it is almost hurtful for me to read something as such. Anything bad is not of God, God does not condem, God does not pick and choose whom/who to love, God does not allow for hurt/pain/sorrow/rascism/depression/anxiety that is of Satan himself and no other. Jonathan Edwards was a man with the wrong ideals, sadly he was very persuassive and had a voice in which people listened.

Dear Diary,
Father God, although I trust and love you with all my heart, and speak with you at all hours of the day; Jonathon Edwards does not speak of you in the holy way. Lord he creates an imagery of you being a condeming man, I know my Lord is not of such. I trust you are here to help everyone, no matter their mistakes or downfalls. Allow Jonathon Edwards to be filled with your holy spitit father, so he may also know the true you.

Elizabeth McGlaughlin
